PORTRAIT PG 622-623 In this story, it talks about a women called Dona Marina. Why does a women need to be portrayed as a traitor to her people because she did something against the norm. As I read this story, I try to picture myself in her shoes. This women took life that gave her and never regretted what she did. I don't know what I would have done. I know I would be scared out of mind. She had been sold in slavery because her family wanted to make sure her half brothers gets the inheritance. She did get the last laugh against them. She came a piece of commodity to a Mayan Chieftain and then given away to Cortes. Along side with Cortes, she held the Spanish conquer the land. I think she didn't regret because she knew that it was something that kept from her from being dying. when you start reading this story, you start to think Cortes is a good guy to her but it just another man who only used her for what he could get. I don't think he could conquer if he didn't have...

When I was reading the chapters. These sections called portraits seen to catch my eye. This is about Cecilia Penifader. She didn't have alto of historic significance but it does shatter what I have learned about women in those days. All I read is about how women are beholden to men. They could never own land. Their stock in life is to get married and have children. Cecilia lived a simple life. She never had to marry. She even bought land with the money she made. Since land was cheap, she could buy a lot it. She hired servants and day laborers to help her. This shows that women independence may have shown up even back then.Even though, Cecilia still had to deal with gender bias like being shamed if she had kids out wedlock, you can see that women were just not property to be bartered. It this little stories that give me  little lift.

It is amazing to read about the early part of the earth. When  you going to grade school or even high school it usually just starts with so called "caveman". You never really hear about how the earth started except maybe in a science class. You hear about the the animals and plants growing first and then came homo sapiens. I really like the cosmic calendar. It really puts in perspective how the formation of the earth more than we give credit for when teaching world history. The first human like creatures didn't show up until late Dec 31st. That is entire year that we don't spend a lot of time learning about. It is like the reading the end of a book before the beginning because it the best part. You don't care how it came to be. You just want to know the end result.                  The first soci...
